Swine Flu (H1N1) is a respiratory infection in humans . The technical name is H1N1 Influenza A . This is a virus that is spread the same way the seasonal flu is spread: through person to person contact.

There have been reported symptoms such as:

  • Fever (over 100° F)
  • cough
  • sore throat
  • body aches
  • lethargy
  • headache
  • chills
  • fatigue
  • diarrhea/vomiting

The flu virus is passed mainly from contact with a person who is coughing or sneezing of people with the flu virus. Another way is by touching something with the flu virus on it and then touching your mouth or nose.

Here are ways you can prevent the transmission of the virus to your body:

  • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough, sneeze or spit. Throw the tissue in the trash right after you use it.
  • Try to avoid close contact with sick people.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after your cough or sneeze.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with your hand or elbow. If you use your hand, immediately wash it.
  • Effective hand washing includes using soap and water and washing for 15- 20 seconds (count or sing happy birthday for its entire song). Do not let the soap go down the drain before the 15 seconds is up.
  • Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective if you do not have access to a sink, soap and water.
  • Drink plenty of water and stay hydrated.
  • Get a good night’s sleep each night.
  • Stay away from refined sugars and processed foods.
  • Eat properly. Make sure fruits and vegetables are part of your daily intake (esp the dark colors).

If you have any flu-like symptoms seek medical attention to be evaluated.
